In a world that is beautifully diverse, it’s important that all aspects of our lives reflect this diversity. One area that often gets overlooked is the greeting card industry. These small tokens of affection, celebration, and connection play a significant role in our lives, yet they often lack the diversity and inclusivity that our world embodies.

Why Representation Matters

Representation is not just about seeing ourselves reflected in the world around us. It’s about feeling seen, acknowledged, valued and feeling like you belong. Some communities are privileged enough to see themselves diversely reflected everywhere at all levels of media, culture and society; however its not the same for everyone. Some communities rarely see themselves represented in the same way, or sometimes only within narrowly defined biases or harmful stereotypes. This can lead to feelings of invisibility or inadequacy and can affect self esteem and self actualization (see Maslow’s hierarchy of needs). Greeting cards are a great entry point for increasing representation and inclusivity for all. Cards are about connecting on a personal level and celebrating unique identities. For many people within underrepresented groups, authentic representation on cards (particularly for significant people or milestone events), is not just a want, it’s a need. For them, its one of the few small but impactful ways to make individuals feel seen on a personal level, where they may not feel seen on a societal level.

The Need for Inclusivity

Inclusivity is about more than just adding diverse faces and cultural references to greeting cards. It’s about creating cards that capture the unique experiences, traditions, and cultures of underrepresented groups. It’s about ensuring that everyone can send or receive a card that speaks to them on a personal level.

The Impact of Authentic Representation

When greeting cards reflect the diversity of our world, they do more than just make us feel seen. They help to normalise diversity and challenge stereotypes. They send a powerful message that everyone, regardless of their race, ethnicity, identity or background, is worthy of celebration.

A Call to Action

The greeting card industry has made some strides towards inclusivity, but there’s still a long way to go. We need more greeting cards created for and by the same underrepresented communities, who can represent them authentically as they know them best. We need cards that celebrate the beauty of diversity and the joy of connection. So, the next time you’re shopping for a greeting card, consider who is being represented and who is not. Do the cards on offer actually represent the person you’re buying the card for or someone else? Or are the only designs on offer generic, and for that reason, less special?  If you can’t find a diverse card that speaks to you, why not support brands that value diversity and inclusivity. Visit platforms like The Black Card Company (www.theblackcardcompany.com) or another niche card platform until diverse cards are no longer niche but mainstream.

After all, everyone deserves to be seen and celebrated. Here’s to a more inclusive and representative greeting card industry, hopefully with more industries to follow!
